SETTING GOALS FOR 2014

It is so easy to go through life without set goals and objective. Very few people have plans. Majority of people just live from day to day without anything particular in mind. Some others just flow with the tide, whatever is trendy is what they do not minding if it is beneficial to them and those around them.

Towards the end of the year, these people get panicky and wonder what exactly they did all through the year. For the group who had a plan to begin with, they have a reasonable count of things achieve during the course of the year, for the others though the list is blank. They look back and take stock and realise that nothing meaningful was done and yet they worked and worked, putting in extra hours at work but have nothing to show or account for.

There are two aspects of life: Planning to succeed and Planning to fail. You might ask ‘is it possible to plan to fail?’ and the answer will be an emphatic YES.

What would you do differently in 2014 to see that it’s not a repeat of 2013? What would make a change? The answer is simple: plan to make 2014 a success in every way. You can do this in the following way.

Firstly, sit down and discover what was not done previously. There are specific things we wanted done but did not do. What are those things? Write it down, itemizing then in order of priority; that is, having a scale of preference. While doing this be sure to differentiate those things which are of benefits to your upliftment: have your focus on career, family, and education. Have your focus also on what would fulfil you, what would make you happy. Most time we focus on things that would not benefit us or improve us in the long run. Like someone making plans and saving to get a car when he or she has the opportunity to get a higher qualification of education.

Once done with itemizing these down, set out time of accomplishments. Like a project, goals have start date and end date; so you want to be sure when you will start and when you will end. Be practical and only set a time you are comfortable with, do not stretch yourself. It is easy to give up on a goal when stretched past your limit.

Knowing that there are things not in your control when setting your goals, be sure to factor in every aspects. Like planning to do a course or get a qualification, you should know when schools begin taking new intakes or when it will be time for writing a particular examination and if you would need to register to sit for such exam. If you need to go for training to better your chances for promotion at work, this same thing applies. You would need to know when such trainings come up and when you need to register for them.

Finance is a necessary factor when planning or making goals. If you do not have the financial backing to start, plan to have the finance. You might need to shift time for starting with your plan if the finance is not available, this will only mean a prolongation of the time it would have taken you to achieve. If it would mean planning to save on finance to achieve, start now and extend the time frame for your goal. So instead of 6 months, you might need to push it to a year or two.

Having all this in place, start measuring your progress weekly, fortnightly, monthly, and quarterly. Depending on what you doing you would need this for sure. Know where you at for the present, what more you need to do and how to do or resources you need to bring in to achieve what you want to achieve. This is necessary because it keeps you in perspective, making you aware of areas where you would need to strengthen or make changes or cancel out entirely.

Itemising your goals and knowing everything you need to know about getting it done and measuring your progress would be of no effect if you do not make the move. Get yourself to act, to do the things you say you want to do. Don’t just have the information, start up immediately and above all trust yourself to finish what you have started.

Everything about our future is wonderful if we would just plan for it.
