Goals are a way of trying to control a future that does not
yet exist; they are for us to get a grasp of what the future has for us. Goals are
great for keeping your sight on specific outcomes. They serve as maps, or set
directions to get us from point A to point B in life. Goals generally are plans
we make to achieve set objectives.
Our individual goals usually align with what we want out of
life and what obligation we have as regards our environment, family and friends
and career. Choosing to live without goals is choosing to remove ourselves from
this responsibility.
Without a plan in place, it is very easy to get derailed. For example, in our everyday living we are faced with new challenges
and new opportunities. Knowing what you have to do at a particular time solely
depends on your goal at hand. Know when to pass on opportunities; not every
opportunity that comes our way is good for that particular time. If it is not
in your plan, shelve it for a better time.
When you do not have a target goal, you find you here and
there, trying to do all at once. A man saving to a rented house has no business
roaming shops and malls buying office items on sale with his savings simply
because the items come at very cheap rates. He has a plan, which is to get a
house and so anything not in line with that goal is a distraction.
Having no goals in life can get us in a situation where we
find we are lost, navigating through life and stuck in difficult terrains. We
find that we going around same circle and for so long day after day and year
after year till old age sets in. To be in this situation for a long time can set people in the part of boredom, frustration, anger, fear, and depression.
Bottom line is that no one can get far in life without
goals. Having a plan or set outcome of one’s life make a whole world of
difference. It gives us a sense of purpose, a sense of control, a sense of
accomplishments once we achieve what we set out to do. This in turn boosts our
self-esteem and confidence and gives us a sense of success.
There is a saying that failing to plan is planning to fail.
Living without goals is living to fail.
